1000 Greyhounds

A small Devonshire(UK)greyhound rescue charity, The Greyhound Sanctuary, are organising a great event for greyhounds for 9th September(2012) - 1000 Greyhounds.

By taking part in this fantastic event - you and your greyhound(s) can:
- help to break a Guinness World Record for the largest single breed dog walk
(currently held for a walk of 700 Labradors in Poland)
- help to raise awareness of the plight of thousands of greyhounds on a huge scale.
- and help to raise money for your chosen greyhound/animal rescue charity.

Other Rescues/Charities can also help and be involved, as can:

Save the 9th September in your diary to join in on a great and important day for
                                              Greyhounds.

If you cannot be there, or help in any of the above ways, then please help to spread the word of 1000 Greyhounds.

Towcester Plans Recommended For Approval.

News of plans for a new greyhound track in early 2011, to be built at Towcester Racecourse, lead to a planning application being submitted to South Northants Council in Sept 2011.

Towcester Racecourse Company, founded by Lord Alexander Hesketh, hopes to be able to prop up its horse racecourse by building a greyhound track, as reported in Oct 2011, where Lord Hesketh spoke:
'In terms of our income it has halved to half a million and it may well halve again over the next few years. This has been quite apparent for about the last five years and something had to be done to make sure the racecourse is profitable.'

So greyhounds are to suffer further in order that horses may continue to suffer.

The planning application is to be considered by South Northants Council on Thursday 23rd Feb(2012)with a recommendation for approval of full planning permission.

Please continue to email your polite concerns and raise awareness to South Northants Council:
planning@Southnorthants.gov.uk.
Please quote planning number:  S/2011/1219/MAF and planning address:  Towcester Racecourse, London Road, Towcester.

Worthy Causes Using Greyhounds

After last years campaign in raising awareness to worthy cause: International Aid Agency Bothar, in their support of the greyhound industry for fund raising, where they responded in an email that they felt that -
'important and striking points' were raised, going on to say -
'We [Bothar] are all agreed that the various viewpoints on the issue [support of greyhound racing] need to be further explored at an organisational level and we intend to pursue this in the new year'.
And recently adding, in a further email after indeed exploring those 'viewpoints' raised, how they -
'think it is most unlikely that we would repeat this in the future.'

Help is again needed into raising awareness to 2 more very worthy causes supporting greyhound racing for fund raising.

            Down Syndrome Ireland

Down Syndrome Ireland are to go ahead with their 2nd nationwide event on the 25th Feb.
After launching their fund raising campaign on 16th Jan.
'Down's parents forced to dig into their own pockets' as 'state services are just not adequate'. DSI has held other fundraising events and to also 'highlight the lack of state funding the charity receives' in the past and campaigns now at cuts and changes to allowances for people with Down Syndrome.
The Irish Government 'has made provision in Budget 2012 to allocate €56.29m to the Horse and Greyhound Racing Fund.' of which €11.26m would go to the Irish Greyhound Boad(IGB/Bord na gCon).*€29.29m of the €56.29m coming from the Exchequer*

So DSI now, again, turn to an industry of abuse funded by the State in order to help raise needed funds.

          McGrath Foundation

In Australia the McGrath Foundation again are relying on greyhounds throughout the whole of Feb for further fund raising.
Despite RSPCA Victoria(Australia)showing concerns in 2011 and a snippet of the death toll of greyhounds in Australia last year, listed by facebook Greyhound Action Australasia group: Greyhound Racing-Don't Bet On It.

Down Syndrome Ireland and McGrath Foundation are indeed worthy causes and rely on donations to continue their work - but to rely on money raised via a gambling industry sustained by the abuse of thousands of greyhounds is of great PR value to the racing industry.

Please contact Down Syndrome Ireland here and the McGrath Foundation here to politely raise awareness to them of their associations with an inherently abusive industry, and to ask that they seek ethical means of fundraising for their much needed donations.
Awareness can also be raised to both charities on how wonderful greyhounds can be as Pets As Therapy Dogs - as seen in Friends of the Hound(Australia), and with a rescued Deerhound as an Irish Therapy Dog.

This recent investigation has indeed shown the truth of behind-the-scenes-of-a-family-fun-night-out.

As always please look up our 'links' page and 'petition' page for other actions/campaign groups.

More on Walthamstow

The turnout at the public meeting of the future of the 'Stow' on Mon 23rd Jan has been highly praised by the pro-racing community. It was a poorly attended by 5 Walthamstow Councillors, and MP supporters(Stella Creasy & Ian Duncan Smith)of the re-opening of the closed greyhound track issued statements, in their absence, opposing the housing plans submitted by housing association L&Q.

MP Stella Creasy had told a Walthamstow Councillor she had received no emails/letters from anyone voicing concerns of the re-opening of the greyhound track, despite replying to GS last year with:
'As someone with a strong commitment to animal welfare I am satisfied that were the track to be re-opened this would be a key component of the work at the track - indeed, I've been working with campaigners to ensure that they work with the League against Cruel Sports and the Dogs Trust to ensure this as a personal priority'
A claim played down by those 2 welfare groups
A claim despite the 'welfare' of these greyhounds filmed at Walthamstow, before it closed.
Though Stella Creasy is yet to reply to emails showing this video, as are other MP's /Councillors/Residents Associations.

A new 'resident association' was formed after the public meeting on the future of the 'Stow'.
'Walthamstow Stadium Area Residents and Community Association', despite saying they are 'currently neither for or against the return of Walthamstow Stadium', just looking around their website and Twitter account shows a bias towards favouring the re-opening of the 'Stow'.
In a reply to the petition posted on Greyhound Safe Twitter WSARCA wrote: 'this isnt about dog racing its about a proposal to build tower blocks and dense estate in an inappropriate area'.

With Walthamforest Council taking comments on the future of the Stow to the end of Feb(2012), please continue to politely email MP's/Councillors/Residents Associations(email address campaign)with your concerns of an expansion of the abuse of greyhounds into Walthamstow -  to raise their awareness to the inherent abuse greyhounds endure to sustain a dwindling industry.
